DEAR DIARY // blooms for spring

Yayoi Kusama ‘Flowers that Bloom in the Cosmos’, c2022 (stainless steel, polyurethane paint)

It’s the last day of spring and even though it’s a rainy day I am scrolling through my photos of Yayoi Kusama’s outdoor sculpture at the Art Gallery of NSW. The Japanese artist is famous for her use of bright colours and polka dots. This piece epitomises springtime at its best and brings pure happiness with its playful joy.

As a child Kusama recalls the story of a hallucination she had in a field of flowers which inspired her dot designs. A true pioneer whose creativity has spanned decades in art, music, design, writing and fashion. I’m in awe of her talent and a trip to Japan is high on the list to see more works in her homeland.
