ECO LIFE // paddington reservoir gardens

Having visited this heritage-listed site many times I realised that I have never shared it before. This gorgeous public space in Paddington was originally a reservoir that supplied water across Sydney in 1878-1899. After this it was used for storage, then became a garage and workshop from 1914-1934 and was finally transformed into a service station in the 1950’s until 1990. During this period two reserves were established to provide open recreational spaces for the area. In 2009, these parks were joined to the renovated reservoir to form Paddington Reservoir Gardens.

The major restoration of the structures and landscaping have made this an architectural masterpiece that has won design awards. Thoughtful care has been taken with the choice and placement of plants and trees that seem to have grown naturally within the building. Streamlined use of industrial metal is a lovely contrast to the nature enclosed in the underground walls. All the signage is an example of clever typography that adds interest without distracting from the beauty of the gardens. It is popular with locals and tourists as a spot to find serenity in the stunning surrounds. Many photo shoots have taken place here and it is also available as a venue to hire. This is a perfect backdrop and such a cool place to see and walk around… or just sit and chill.
