STREETSCAPES // darling point
Darling Point is a stunning harbourside suburb with spectacular views and historic homes. By the 1950’s many houses gave way to the development of high rise apartment buildings which take full advantage of the vistas. There are so many incredible heritage properties in this area so it is hard to capture them all. For now I have highlighted two examples of architecture that have a long history and share the same landscaped grounds.
The Trossachs is a unique 1850's cottage that was occupied by one family for over 123 years. Made from local sandstone with beautiful period features, it is nestled behind the landmark Ranelagh. They face off against each other in opposing style eras yet they still complement one another.
Ranelagh was originally a three-storey stone mansion built in the early 1850’s and served as a grand residence to many influential owners. It finally became a boarding house and then a guest house, until it was demolished to make the iconic block in 1967. There was an increasing need for land for home unit development and at the time this was the tallest residential unit building in Australia. It is soon undergoing another refurbishment, so it will be interesting to see how it will be transformed while respecting the aesthetic.
