STREETSCAPES // sculptural sydney
It is undeniable that the Sydney Opera House is one of the most recognised buildings in the world. Architect Jørn Utzon created a design using spherical shells that fused ancient and modernist influences. Sydney’s CBD is an eclectic mix of architecture, from Romanesque to Gothic Revival to Art Deco to Modernist to Contemporary (there are too many styles to list).
Walking around the city I came across King & Phillip Residences designed by fjmtstudio. Located in a pocket of strong colonial heritage sites, it manages to blend in with the historic surrounds while standing out at the same time. The sleek look is softened by the natural sandstone, curved glass and timber creating an organic feel.
There is so much construction that it is hard to keep up, and I’m planning to explore the streets for more interesting finds. I like how the old and new weaves together, but the past should be preserved while anything modern needs to be bold, unique and artful.
