TYPE-RIGHTER // factory rebirth
With some errands to run and gifts to buy, I headed over to Birkenhead Point which is Sydney's largest outlet centre. Browsing the retail stores of international and Australian brands, I then needed to find a restroom. So here I was, wandering down a corridor until I came across this seating area just outside the bathrooms. Stopped in my tracks by this beautiful mural, I was intrigued as to whether it was an original sign or a commemorative artwork.
But why Dunlop Tyres? A quick search and I discovered that this shopping precinct was formerly an industrial warehouse that closed in 1977. Deep diving even further revealed it had been a tyre factory, rubber company, salting warehouse, race track and brick works – dating all the way back through to the 1800’s. This significant site is steeped in history that has been transformed multiple times and lived many lives. Who knows what the future has in store…
